What is the best thing about being an Accessibility Consultant?
Digital accessibility is a very important civil rights issue. I am proud to do anything I can to raise awareness and help make it possible for everyone to have the access they need to do day to day activities. Shopping may seem frivolous, but it is a key aspect of American life. Accessible shopping experiences help make it possible for people with disabilities to be more independent.
What is the hardest thing about being Accessibility Consultant?
What was the most exciting thing that happened this month?
I co-lead Target’s accessibility user testing initiative. We started recruiting for Target’s Digital Accessibility Insiders user testing panel. We are very excited to look through the responses and put the panel together.
What’s your greatest accomplishment in your career at Target so far?
Working with our team to write Target’s accessibility documentation. We now have close to 30 procedures that address several types of functionality across many platforms including websites, apps, and kiosks. They help our team do our work and also allow us to reach a much wider audience including partners we don’t consult with on a regular basis.
Best career advice that you’ve received?
Early in my career, one of my managers said “you have to get in people’s heads.” What he meant is that it takes a lot of work to get people to change their habits to include you, and that it won’t matter what you do or how well you do it if no one knows about it. This has been really important for the Accessibility Team. Most of our partners did not know what accessibility was at first, and we had to work closely with them so that they would integrate accessibility into their work flows and thought process.
